Week 1
As we begin this
journey together I want to encourage you to start each day of your study with
prayer. So often I am in a hurry to complete my bible study homework that I
skip praying and then I am left wondering why I receive little or no revelation,
and have no deep life change. My prayer for us is that He would reveal to us
the areas of our hearts and lives that need…no must be surrendered and that we
would be bold enough to be obedient to His call.
This week I want
to start with John 3:16-21. I know John 3:16 seems a bit basic but I want to go
here for two reasons:
1) If you have never professed Christ as your
Savior this is the most simply summed up definition of the Good News…The
Gospel. God loved you so much and desires a relationship with you so much that
He sent His only Son to die so that He might know you and so that you will have
eternal life. If this is a relationship that you have not entered into I
encourage you to speak with your bible study leader or pastor about this. This
is the single most important decision you will ever make.
2) As a believer
having grown up in church my entire life I lose sight of the cross and the
price that was paid for my redemption. I grow apathetic, often taking for
granted the provision that God made so that I may Know Him, Love Him, Serve
Him, and Worship Him. I need to be reminded of my Salvation…my First Love.
So let’s get
started.
John 3:16-21 (ESV)
16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes
in him should not perish but
have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world
might be saved through him. 18 Whoever believes in him
is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he
has not believed in the name of
the only Son of God. 19 And this is the
judgment: the light
has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light
because their works were evil. 20 For everyone who does
wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. 21 But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly
seen that his works have been carried out in God.”
Let
us surrender ourselves to the Holy Spirit as we study His Word. Let us come
with great expectation and hope, willing to receive a word and ready to walk in
obedience.
Day 1: Initial Read/Context
- What stands out to you at first glance in
this passage?
- Who is this passage written to, what was
going on before, during and after, and what is
being said and thought?
Day2: Truths
-What does this passage teach me about the author?
-What does this passage teach me about God?
-What can I learn about who I am in Christ?
Day 3: Promises
-What promises are being given in this passage?
Day 4: Commands
-What commands am I being given?
Day 5; Apply
-How can I specifically apply what I have learned from this passage to
how I am living
today?
-What is God revealing to me about Himself?
-What is God revealing to me about
myself and who I am in Him?
This week I
wanted to find a place that we can return to throughout this study...a place of
foundational Truth, a place of remembrance and hope, but also a calling.
Let us press
into Him, Rest in Him, and Pursue Him with every fiber of our being.
